type='text'>Season 2 Behind the Scenes...

Thanks to Buddytv for the following...

As we get closer to the long-awaited return of Jericho, which is airing Tuesday, February 12 at 10pm, CBS is giving us more glimpses of the explosive season premiere. This week a brand new behind the scenes video was released, showing the complicated set up of a napalm dropping scene that will inevitably rock the citizens of Jericho. Special effects coordinator J.D. Streett walked viewers through the dangerous stunt, explaining how it takes some big trenches, hours of preparation, and 150 gallons of gasoline to create one stunning action sequence.

Though Jericho fans will only witness the napalm explosion for a matter of seconds, the set up for such a stunt is quite extensive. People on the set have to stay a minimum of 200 feet away from the fire, thousands of gallons of water have to be poured on the hillside to wet down shrubbery, and all the grass within 60 to 80 feet of the explosion has to be cut. The crew also gets just one shot to capture the explosion on film, otherwise more hours of prep time would have to be wasted.

The end of the video cuts the completed footage from the episode with the behind the scenes shots, and the results are quite spectacular. A video like this really emphasizes the action packed approach that CBS has taken in promoting the second season of the series. First there was the rocking promo set to a song by The Hives, followed by the "100 Reasons to Watch Jericho" clip that was packed with guns and sex, and now this glimpse at a 40 foot high wall of flames. Whether this continued focus on the action in the series will pay off with higher ratings has yet to be seen, but in my opinion it seems like a smart advertising tactic.

Take a look at the video below, and find out if actor Kenneth Mitchell really got his eyebrows singed off.

Source: BUddytv

SCIFI to Air Reruns...

The Sci Fi Channel has been known to rerun popular sci-fi shows from other networks, such as Firefly, Heroes, and The X-Files. Now they've picked up the rights to rerun seasons 1 and 2 of the CBS drama Jericho. The show will make its debut on the Sci Fi Channel with a four episode marathon on Monday, February 11 from 7pm to 11pm. It will begin airing in its regular time slot of Mondays at 10pm beginning February 18. The network will also air the series in high definition on the Sci Fi HD channel.

"Jericho is a gripping science fiction series that SCI FI Channel is excited to add to our schedule," said Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President of Programming and Original Movies. "Thanks to the passion and persistence of its loyal viewers who saved this program from being canceled, new viewers can now experience this show for the first time on the SCI FI Channel while CBS continues the story in its second season run starting this February."

As great as it is for Sci Fi to give Jericho this kind of exposure, I can't help but wish they had acquired these rights earlier. The second season of Jericho begins airing on CBS on Tuesday, February 12, just one night after the reruns begin. If the network had picked up these reruns months ago it may have given the show a boost in the ratings upon its return, as some curious viewers probably would have tuned in. As it stands, the second season of Jericho will probably be completed before most viewers even realize the repeats are airing.

However, any exposure is good exposure, and I'm sure there are plenty of Jericho fans who will be happy to re-watch every single episode. Just beware of the commercials for the terrible Sci Fi Original Movies. Those can suck your brain dry.

Source: BuddyTV

New Direction...

Carol Barbee, executive producer of CBS' post-apocalyptic series Jericho, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming seven-episode second season will tell a complete story--but that producers shot two endings in case the show is picked up for a third season.

"We don't end the show," Barbee said in an interview. "What we do, we did two endings. We shot two endings. And one of them basically just lets you know that everybody is OK." She added: "The other ending shows you exactly where we're going to go for the third season. ... I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger as much as I would say you say, 'Oh, OK, now I know where we're going to go.' But if there's not going to be a third season, the other one puts sort of a nice emotionally satisfying point to it."

Jericho returns next month with an episode that picks up the story from the season-one cliffhanger, in which the townspeople of the small Kansas hamlet--led by Skeet Ulrich, Ashley Scott and Lennie James--were preparing to go to war with neighboring New Bern. Barbee offered a few spoilers for the first episodes of the new season, "Reconstruction, Condor" and "Jennings & Rall."

"We get into Jericho and reconstruction has begun," Barbee said. "The Cheyenne government is in town. They're rebuilding. People are getting jobs, people are getting cell phones, life is coming back to Jericho. But it's changed, because now there's this government, Cheyenne, and they have contractors who are working for them named Jennings & Rall, and ... this company ... [has] set up a storefront on Main Street. And they're going to be a big presence in our lives for the next season."

Barbee said that the new season will take the show into new territory thematically. "The headline is [that] the first season was about surviving the nuclear attack and saving the town," she said. "The second season is about saving the country and our way of life, our system of government. And then the natural progression is to have that be save the world for the third season."

Source: SCI-FI Wire

Latest from Ausiello...

Question: Will we find out what Jake was up to during his missing five years on Jericho? type='text'>Pamela Reed loses "Jericho" Contract...

Thanks to Spoiletv for the following...

CBS has always been known as the network that likes to pull in some of the older audiences, but apparently some network executives feel that "Jericho" may have suffered from being a little too old.

Already obvious that Gerald McRaney was not going to return as Johnston Green following his character's death in the first season finale, his grieving widow -- who many viewers connected with during the course of the show's initial episode order -- is getting the boot right behind him as CBS has not offered actress Pamela Reed a contract.

"The average age of actors on that show is under 40, and those of us over 40 are gone," the 58-year-old actress said, according to Film Stew. Reed made the comments during a panel on ageism at the Los Angeles Femme Film Festival.

Just because she is without a contract doesn't mean she's necessarily off the show as she is scheduled to appear in at least one of the short-order episodes already produced for the show's abbreviated second season. But it does mean that if "Jericho" is to survive for a third season, it could do so without Mrs. Green.

Reed was one of several actors from the show that was providing support to fans trying to revive "Jericho" after CBS had canceled it last May. She is best known for her roles in the film "Kindergarten Cop" and the HBO series "Tanner '88."

It's still unclear when the already-produced episodes of "Jericho" will air, but it could come as a mid-season replacement as early as next month, but more likely in early 2008.

Source: Spoielrtv

Filming Update...

Hey everybody!
It's the last shooting day of episode 6, written by my writing partner Stephen Scaia, our awesome boss Carol Barbee, and myself. It's been another great experience in a long line of great experiences--made even better by our director, Scott Peterson.

Contrary to some blog reports, Scott will not be bringing aliens to Jericho. Also, as of this writing, there's not a zombie in sight. Sorry about that. Maybe Season 3? Anyway, as I look at a crowded Main Street full of things I can't describe without spoiling the season, I wanted to give my personal thanks to the fans for all of
this. A particular shout out to our superfans Shumi and Bill who I got to meet recently. If we have any questions about continuity, we're calling them from now on. They know the show better than we do.

Right now the sun is setting as we prepare for the last scene of the evening. Without giving anything away, I'll tell you it involves some fire...some gunshots...and some flesh-eating zomb--oh wait, I shouldn't ruin it. Anyway, thanks again for the support. Hopefully you'll enjoy watching these next 7 as much as we have enjoyed making them.

Source: JerichoBlog

More on Emily Rose...

On "Jericho," she is set to portray Trish Merrick, a smart and ambitious aid worker who arrives in Jericho to help with the reconstruction of the town, in five episodes. Peters will be directing what may be the next-to-last episode of the post apocalyptic drama which is so far only scheduled to run for seven episodes. As The 4400's small but extremely loyal following knows, Peters is capable of delivering intense television action.

The title and plot of Peters' episode is not known yet, but bearing in mind that his credits are almost entirely composed of science fiction credits, one has to wonder: Is Jericho going to be taking a turn for the weird?

While Peters' role in the production has not been completely fleshed out, it is possible that he is being brought in as a consulting producer.

Originally, when Jericho premiered, the Internet buzz was brimming with speculation that the show would eventually cross over into the territory of reality-bending outings like Lost. That did not turn out to be the case. While Jericho most definitely concocted a conspiratorial plot that any Tom Clancey fan would love, it never brought the weird.

Of course, putting aside the fact that Peters has practical no non-genre credits to his name, there is no reason why his brand of on screen tension could not serve Jericho well in its current slant. However, it is hard to say just how far Jericho's creators will go to try to save the show.

It is patented speculation to even think in these terms, but a slightly more surreal plot evolving from the current story would not be such a gigantic reach. In the world of television, particularly, anything goes. None the less, at least one thing is for sure. One of televisions best kept secrets, Scott Peters, is coming to Jericho for at least one episode.

Source: BuddyTV

Set Visit Preview...

Thanks to SpoilerTV and Coming Soon for the following...

It was left for dead on the cutting room floor – but "Jericho" was saved by none other than NUTS!

In an unprecedented move, CBS brought back the sci-fi drama just two weeks after cancelling it. And that's all because of a major fan campaign that made world wide headlines. Millions of boxes of peanuts were sent to CBS Television City begging the TV execs to keep the show on the air.

And it worked! With a shortened seven-episode arch, "Jericho" will return to the network as a mid-season replacement.

ComingSoon.net was invited to the Van Nuys, CA set where we spoke to the producers and creators of the show, as well as Lennie James who plays Robert Hawkins. We were also able to take a sneak peak at some clips from Season 2 and watch a scene from episode 5.

You could tell right off the bat that everyone was so excited to be back; producer Karim Zreik was our tour guide for the day, and took us around the various sets and gave us some insight into how the story will continue. A new element to Season 2 will be the introduction of mega-company, Jennings and Rall. "They'll play a prominent roll in the next seven episodes of Season 2," Zreik said. "Episode 1, of Season 2, you'll see the building of Jennings and Rall, who helps re-build Jericho; that's the storyline of Season 2. It's a new look for Jericho; lights work, electricity is back on, power, there are actually cars that drive up and down the street."

Season 2 will pick up right after the battle scene from last year in the first episode, and then they'll jump three weeks ahead for the next episode. We were on set during the taping of the final day of filming episode 5; show 6 picked up the very next day.

The sheriff's office received a new look for this season; they brought in Esai Morales as new character Col. Hoffman. "Part of the storyline in Season 2 is the military we introduced everybody to in episode 22, now plays a role in Season 2. The Cheyenne military moves in, and shares the office space with the sheriff. Esai has been put in charge, and because this town does not have a sheriff, yet, he takes over."

After the fans brought the show back, the one thing on the mind of creator/executive producer John Steinberg is keeping them happy. "I think we just want to tell the right end to this story," he said. "In changing it from 22 episodes to seven episodes, we sort of broke it like a movie and so we want to find the best end to this movie we can come up with, and I think we have a pretty good one. I think you are going to feel satisfied, but you'll also know there's a lot more story coming down the road. And it's not tied up in a bow in any way."

As for the change with Jennings and Rall, producer Dan Shots pointed out, "It's sort of a metaphor for big business coming into this small town, like a Wal-Mart in a way."

John jumped in with, "They're all kind of helping each other. This used to be a main street with all mom and pop owned stores, and now there's this big monolithic store front. We really wanted this season to be about our world and be about something. I think we got there."

Whether the bombs will be going off or not, everyone was pretty mum about that. "Maybe," was everyone's response. But John added, "The practical element will get resolved pretty quickly, but the first season is going to bleed story through the second season – especially that finale. They went through way too much and it was too terrible for them to get over it in seven episodes. And whether this was intentional or not, it ended up being a very good canvas for the story we wanted to tell. We're protecting a Season 3, and we don't know if we're coming back, but the story is protected and have a pretty good sense of what we'd be doing."

And Dan said, "We promised the fans that we would pay this off, and we were a little worried about doing it the right way, but we give them everything they want and they'll be pretty happy. And it's always building; we're hoping to come back for Season 3. You'll feel it in the story, and you'll see there's a larger story to tell after these seven."

Before a third season, "Jericho" will get its second season. We'll have much more from the set of "Jericho," including our chat with Lennie James. That's all leading up to the premiere on CBS.

Source: ComingSoon and SpoilerTV

Filming Update...

Thanks to SpoilerTV for the following...

So we've passed the one-month-left mark. Can you believe it? In less than four weeks, we will have wrapped production. Time flies when you're making TV, but these weeks went especially fast, I have to say. The good news is, we came up with some great story ideas for episode 7 today, at which point Carol asked for a time-out to, quote, "acknowledge the awesomeness" of what we've done with these seven. It was bittersweet, to say the least.

At the moment, we are close to having episode 5 in the can. 5 features some gunplay, so there's been lots of shots ringing out around the stages today. It's Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James doing the shooting, but I can't say at who. If I had to pick one word to describe the stories we're telling this year, I would say "intense." Seriously, these episodes are like missiles. I don't want to rack the bats, so to speak, but I think you, the fans, are going to be very pleased. Not to mention jonesing for more.

Alright, I'm passing the baton to Lisa Schultz now, she'll continue the cheerleading in style. When "Jericho" finishes this month, Lisa and I will have worked together for close to five years. Yet another reason for Season 3, as if we needed more.

Hello Fans! As you can tell, Robert Levine is a wonderful writer. I'm very proud to work with him. He wrote Episode 4 this season and it is a remarkable piece of art.

Today, I've been cowering under my desk. The gunshots Robert mentioned that are coming from the stages are very realistic and quite thrilling, much like everything else on Jericho. I don't want to get too close, though. I'm afraid of guns. I'll wait to watch what I'm hearing today when it airs on CBS in the spring (or maybe sooner!) I hope you all turn out to watch it too! Lots of love to all of you.

Source: SpoilerTV

DVD Sales volume low...

Thanks to BuddyTV for the following...

Jericho's stalwart fans are on the right track by pushing for DVD sales, but the show has yet to significantly push the needle. With fans hoping to bolster the shows viewer ship by launching initiatives to purchase Jericho's first season for friends and family, the show is lagging far behind on its contemporaries in terms of pre-orders.
Jericho does not need to be a best seller on DVD to secure its success on the tube, but it wouldn't hurt. Networks have become increasingly aware of a shows brand potential over the years, and at first glance Jericho seems like it is cut from the same material as other shows succeeding with this mentality (Heroes, Lost).

Jericho has succeeded in telling an interesting, conspiratorial story full of meaningful subtext, but it did not bridge into the science fiction tinged mentality that some expected it would when the series started out. Those are the fans that typically put more emphasis on owning a memento of the show, as evidenced by Heroes current number 2 position on Amazon's best selling DVD list.

However, as if to smite my point, The Office is currently number 1 on Amazon, and House is the only television show on Billboard's top ten best selling DVD. Several factors could be at play here, it may be that a large percentage of Jericho's fan base is just not going to purchase the set due to the tenuous nature of the shows future.

Anyway you look at it, Jericho's position at 311 on Amazon is nothing to get overly concerned about. At the end of the day, Jericho's next renewal is going to be inextricably dependent on its success in ratings, not DVD sales. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't share the gift of Jericho's post apocalyptic parable with your un-indoctrinated friends and family.

Source: BuddyTV

DVD...

Jericho: Season 1 of the famously reprieved Jericho isn’t out until Oct. 2. After sending over 20 tons of nuts to CBS headquarters, fans are about to face yet another challenge in prolonging the post-apocalyptic drama series. In an attempt to put forth the same kind of energy and dedication for yet another cause, loyal supporters have decided to come up with the Jericho DVD project.

As reported previously, the Jericho season 1 DVD is expected for release this fall, specifically on October 2. According to fans, buying the DVD is their best tool in showing the network their support, which will hopefully entail a long life for Jericho.

As revealed by show producer Karim Zreik, DVD sales numbers are important to CBS. Fans will now try to promote the show through the DVD, spreading it to many people as possible, in time for the return of Jericho on television.

But while the DVD project may serve as an introduction to entice new viewers to watch the upcoming season, it will also serve a more notable cause, the American troops.

A site called jerichorangers4ourtroopers.com has already set up a PayPal account to accommodate any amount of donation, which will be used to purchase the season 1 DVDs and have them sent to Staten Island Project Homefront, an organization dedicated to supporting deployed military personnel. Any money left over will also be sent directly to Staten Island Homefront to help cover their costs of shipping. Staten Island Project Homefront, in turn, will distribute them to military men and women abroad since one of the items being requested by the men and women overseas are DVDs.

Organizers of the project intend to purchase the DVDs at the end of September to take advantage of the pre-release price and free shipping at Amazon.com.

Meanwhile, here are some details about the season 1 DVD.

Released by Paramount Home Entertainment, Jericho - The Complete First Season DVD will feature 22 season 1 episodes with bonus materials. It includes "Building Jericho" featurette, "What If" featurette on the evolution of nuclear arms since the end of WWII, commentary on five episodes and some deleted scenes.

Source: buddyTV

New Deal?...

Thanks to BuddyTV for the following...

Although the fate of CBS's Jericho still hangs in the balance, showrunner Jon Turteltaub and his studio, Junction Entertainment, has signed a multi-year overall deal with the network. Aside from Turteltaub, Jericho co-executive producers Karim Zreik and Dan Shotz, both of whom work for Junction, will also remain with CBS.

"They are smart, collaborative and have been extremely instrumental in making the show a cult favorite," David Stapf, president of CBS Paramount, told Variety. "They had a clear vision of the direction of the show both in look and story. We're fortunate that Jon not only brought his sense of humor, but his cinematic style to television."

Of his Junction colleagues, Turteltaub said, “Without Dan and Karim, there's no company -- it's just me sitting around in my underwear wanting to be in showbiz," Turteltaub said. “These guys make things happen."

Jericho, which will return for a second season next year, marks Turteltaub's television debut. The drama series has gained a small but loyal following, whose grassroots campaign resurrected the show from its May cancellation.

The campaign had fans sending numerous emails to CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler and bombarding the network with around 50,000 pounds of nuts. The network has ordered seven episodes for the second season, which will air as a midseason replacement.

Jericho is actually the result of a deal Turteltaub signed with the network in 2005. Following his film, National Treasure, Turteltaub was successfully recruited by Tassler.

"I loved every minute of it," Tassler, who is a fan of the series herself, told Variety. "Throughout the entire experience, Jon and his talented team have impressed me with their passion and dedication."

Jericho is a post-apocalyptic drama series set in a small, rural town in Kansas. The cast includes Michael Gaston, Alicia Coppola, Kenneth Mitchell, Skeet Ulrich, Pamela Reed, Gerald McRaney, Lennie James, Brad Beyer, Ashley Scott, Sprague Grayden, Eric Knudsen and Shoshanna Stern.

Presently, Turtelaub is busy working on the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The film boasts a stellar cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Jon Voight, Helen Mirren, Harvey Keitel, Justin Bartha and Ed Harris.

Source: BuddyTV

Latest from Kristin...

Frankie in Hollywood, Florida: I haven't heard much about Jericho lately. Pictures, and everything.

Being net savvy has helped establish many a phenom and cult favorite alike. Some argue internet communities are virtually the back bone for shows like Stargate, Alias (when it was on), and even more popular shows like Heroes, Lost, and Prison Break. The Jericho folks are definitely not going to underestimate the power of the interenet, particularly since it was that power that brought them back to the air to begin with.

Jericho Blog: The Salty Scoop has been up for nearly a month now, and began to coincide with the gangs appearance at Comicon. Since then, the blog has been one of the best sources for breaking news and pics from the set and has established an avid readership amongst the battle hardened Jericho internet community.

Spoilers are kept at a dull roar on the blog, but it is not at all uncommon to see the occasional set pic, and even some stills from actual shooting. The traffic numbers, of course, are not available to the public, but the blog's popularity abroad certainly seems to illustrate that the venture is having an impact.

One bit of news that may bode well for Jericho fans is the recent announcement that creator Jon Turteltaub has signed an extensive deal with CBS. Was part of that deal assuring a happy future for Jericho? That is not likely, but his presence as a developer for the network certainly bolsters Nina Tassler's confidence in Jericho.

Source: BuddyTV

Emily Rose joins cast...

Emily Rose has landed multi-episode arcs on Jericho

It is not clear how her character will be incorporated in the post-apocalyptic world of Jericho.

Source: SpoilerTV

Will it survive?...

Jericho's widely heralded resurrection came with a price: a reduced budget, and roughly a quarter of a season to prove it was up to CBS's standards. With a limited scope, major characters gone, and tighter confines to tell a story, what are Jericho's chances for survival? Very, very good.

You might think the odds are against the little apocalyptic drama that could, but in fact they couldn't be better. A funny thing happens to shows when they know they are ‘on the bubble,' a sort of make or break atmosphere builds up around the creative team and the true grit is brought to the table.

The question isn't “can” Jericho make the impact it needs with only six prime time episodes, it is “will it?” Jericho, in its best form, was some of the best television out there during the '06 season. CBS even admitted that the hiatus they imposed on the show broke its ratings stride. While never swelling to the crescendo of prime time serials like Lost, Jericho certainly at times reached Prison Break numbers at worst.

Best of all, its message of unity in the face of an awful disaster coupled with a sinister conspiracy driven plot was a long shot that succeeded. In a post-9/11 America, making a television series that uses the worst case scenario as its backdrop and dares to combine new world order “we did this to ourselves” subtext is a risky, risky concept.

Jericho's chances for success hinge entirely on the creative team taking their limited opportunity at face value and operating at the highest levels of quality that were achieved during season one. All indications are that the cast and crew are united in a tenacity that echoes the citizens of their fictional burg – it's a display of artistic dedication that is just far too uncommon in Hollywood these days. It just has to win.

Source: BuddyTV

Crew member talks on Cast's Attitude...

The people working on Jericho have always been vocal about their gratitude towards their supporters for their efforts to revive the series for another season. Fans will be thrilled to know that the cast's words of appreciation goes beyond the camera, as described by crew member Phillip W. Palmer, who attests the noticeable change of attitude among its cast and crew.

“The attitude and overall mood is fantastic. Our first days back were like the first day of school after the summer break. When the cast and producers returned from Comicon this past weekend, we all gathered around to hear the stories. They were blown away by all the fan support. We're so happy to have been part of this project, and amazed by all of the fans. We stayed in contact with each other after the cancellation, and during the save Jericho campaign. Constantly emailed links and YouTube videos to each other, in total fascination of what was going on. The Jericho fans are really responsible for bringing us back, it's your season,” Palmer revealed.

Palmer, who currently works as the show's production sound mixer and who has been in the field of sound mixing since 1999, has admitted that working on Jericho has been a lot of challenge for him.

“Lots of machine shops, trucks and warehouses… You'll hear all sorts of things like machinery, back up beepers, sirens, trucks, radios, and all kinds of chatter. During the day, this is what you hear on Main Street Jericho. In order to give a good clean track for editorial, there is a lot of noise to keep down while recording our dialog. It's quite a challenge sometimes. Oh, did I mention all the air traffic...Every project has these same challenges, make a noisy place sound like a quiet place. Sometimes we pull it off...and sometimes not,” he revealed.

Filming season two has also involved a lot of long days for the cast of Jericho. On the other hand, Palmer expects production schedule to be even more demanding in the future.

Though the cast seriously devoted to work, they still find time to unwind and have fun with each other.

“We have been known to get together every once in a while. We are pretty tired after a hard week at work, so most of us run home to our families. There is the occasional screening party, wrap party, and BBQ. We have a regular get together as the Jericho Gun Club, always good fun,” Palmer added.

Source: BuddyTV

New President...

The show will be introducing the new acting president of the U.S. this season. Now CBS/Paramount has presented the rear box art for this October 2nd release. You can see it below, and it lists the following details about extras on this set:

* Building Jericho: An in-depth look at the genesis and creation of the show, featuring exclusive interviews with the cast and crew. Highlights include cast audition tapes seen for the first time.
* What If?: A revealing look at how the nuclear arms race evolved since the end of World War II. Where do we stand now if an attack were to occur; how would we survive either a man-made or a natural catastrophe?
* Deleted Scenes
* Commentaries:
o "Pilot: The First Seventeen Hours" with Jon Turteltaub and Carol Barbee
o "Fallout" with Jon Turteltaub and Carol Barbee
o "Rogue River" with Jon Turteltaub and Skeet Ulrich
o "Red Flag" with Lennie James and Carol Barbee
o "Vox Populi" with Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James and Carol Barbee

Sounds great! Unfortunately the back of the box also has these notices: "Some Music Has Been Changed For This Home Entertainment Version" and "Some Episodes May Be Edited From Their Original Network Versions". We don't have the details behind those notices, but we're glad the studio is saying so up front. I am a 30-year-old male, from Maryland and my wife and I are extremely liberal. Our love of this show and our minor contribution to the Save Jericho campaign are in no way related to our political beliefs. This show's creator has been rather critical of the current political landscape and in her recent interviews she even makes mention of ruffling feathers because of the real-life issues going on in Iraq. Apparently, the show will mirror some of our current "dilemmas." The love we have for this show is based on its focus on human struggling after a terrible event. We have seen our fair share of newsworthy tragedies in recent years. Nothing brings to light the human struggle as much as this show does. The hope it provides is what makes the show so watchable. Thanks for your time.— Josh L.

Matt Roush: It's probably true that the best chance Jericho has to succeed is to cross all ideological divides while reflecting the schisms in society that surface as the people of Jericho rebuild and reach out to a drastically changed new world. I got quite a bit of heated mail this week from Jericho fans who didn't cotton to the suggestion last week that the show's appeal was conservative in nature. All I'll add to that discussion is to say that one hallmark of a successful show is that people of different persuasions can relate to it. It's rare enough these days for self-proclaimed conservatives and liberals to find common ground on anything. Maybe Jericho is more utopian than I realized.

Question: In last Friday's column you answered Annmarie P.'s question and comments about Jericho. Your last statement was: "Whatever the fate of Jericho, I would hate to think that it could succeed by simply pandering to a single political group, or that CBS would be punished by some if it eventually drops Jericho because the publicity over its resurrection didn't result in a significant-enough ratings spike." Isn't it too soon to tell what kind of ratings Jericho will bring in? I find it hard to believe that CBS is not filling our magazines or commercial airwaves with promos about this show. This is their opportunity to have a similar experience as ABC does with Lost. I am a huge fan of both Jericho and Lost. Although Lost is my favorite in comparison, I think Jericho is a unique show. My only fear now is that because it is only seven episodes that the PTB will cram major stories into those seven hours. This show deserves to prove itself on a full-season schedule. After all, CBS seems to have no problem using Jericho as a summer filler when there is nothing new on. I think CBS will have a lot of backlash if they cancel Jericho again, but only time will tell. What do you think?— Bridget

Matt Roush: The point I was trying to make was that if Jericho for whatever reason doesn't succeed in its second outing next season (and I hope it does, for its fans' sake), nothing political will be read into any decision to cancel it. Fans will have every right to protest, if it comes to that — and I'd be surprised if they didn't, especially where Jericho is concerned. But to suggest that CBS is somehow turning its back on conservatives if Jericho ultimately doesn't succeed (and I'm not saying it won't): That's nonsense.

Source: TVguide

Survival Guide...

Jericho fans have passed their first test in successfully bringing the apocalyptic drama back for a second chance, but future challenges still face the show when it returns. The Friday run has been luke warm to hot by Friday standards, which may yet hold the seasons best chance for survival, yet the first challenge may come in October when Jericho's DVD set hits the streets.

Jericho, from the beginning, was meant to have ‘brand appeal' in the same way that Heroes and Lost have succeeded. The storyline is rife with the possibilities for spin-off online games, and other tangential items. While it may not pack the same genre trappings as Heroes and Lost, it definitely presents enough raw material to join the ranks even if it does have to bypass the lucrative Sci Fi fanboy ranks.

The first test of ‘brand appeal' is going to be when the DVD set hits the streets. Statistically, these sets serve one of two purposes. They either indoctrinate a new viewer, or they provide the hardened viewer with an enhanced viewing experience as well as a snazzy keepsake of their favorite shows. Light sales could be eyeballed as an indicator of consumer apathy in either bracket.

On the flip side, Friday holds the most concentrated number of hardcore TV viewers. While the Friday audiences may be smaller, they tend to reflect viewers who spend a lot of time in front of the tube all week long. It is likely that a fair number of the viewers that tuned in for Jericho's second run were new viewers. As for the less than impressive numbers the drama received on Friday, no network looks for a blockbuster in those time slots.

There has not been an official announcement on when Jericho will return to the screen, there is still a persistent rumor that should the right show fail in the right spot the show could return as early as October. The more likely scenario seems to be January. In either case, eyes are on Wednesday at 8:00pm, not Friday, for Jericho's second at-bat.

Source: BuddyTV

Production Begins :) ...

Following the announced resurrection of Jericho, the cast and crew of the CBS drama series are now eager to get back to work and exert all efforts to reciprocate the gratifying display of loyalty and support from fits fans to bring back the series for yet another season.

The next couple of weeks are going to be very hectic for the cast and crew of Jericho. Filming has already started on July 31 for the seven-episode order CBS officially picked up earlier in June.

Read on for a quick update on Jericho's production progress.
“Hey Everybody. [This is] just a quick update on our first two weeks of production. We wrapped episode one on Tuesday night [July 31]. Our director, Steve Boyum, was amazing. He set the tone for our seven-day production shoots. The cast was so fired up to be back. Our crew stepped up big time. Episode two began production on Wednesday [Aug 1] and our director, Chris Leitch, is picking up right where Boyum left off. Talented guys. So, as we work on editing episode one, shooting episode two, and prepping episode three [which starts production next Friday, Aug. 10] we've got our hands full. The Writers Room is adding finishing touches to our final three episodes. It's busy time,” Karim Zreik, co-executive producer of the series stated on the network's website.

Prior to filming the second season, the cast and crew graced the recently held Comic-Con, in which they talked about the show and its upcoming season.

“Comic-Con was simply phenomenal. It was great to see so many fans come out and offer their support. The t-shirts were a huge hit. This show is a family, and we were excited to see it grow,” Zreik wrote on the CBS website.

There is no word yet on the exact return of Jericho. Meanwhile, the network is working several ways to help promote the show to a new audience.

“At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that Jericho will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting Jericho on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network [online], releasing the first season DVD… and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on,” CBS President Nina Tassler said in a statement.

Source: BuddyTV

Matt Roush Report...

Question: Last season I refused to watch Jericho because I knew (I seem to have a sixth sense about these things) that it would get canceled. The critics seemed to walk away from Jericho as well, so I felt vindicated by that choice. Then cancellation came, and I breathed a sigh of relief: Another heartbreak averted. The "save the show" campaign was no surprise to me. "Those poor fans," I thought, "networks only care about ratings." And then it happened: CBS brought Jericho back. How had these fans done something that I had hoped for so many times before? I started reading the message boards and I listened to the online talk show. If these people could love a show this much, there had to be something to it. So I started watching the reruns. Well, I can see why the pilot was dissed by a lot of the critics. There were some serious holes in the concept, and I wasn't sure what I thought about the characters. But toward the end of the season, Jericho had grown into a well-executed, character-driven, action-oriented show. Now here's the important part: Many of the fans (myself included) don't watch anything else on CBS, or on network TV for that matter. The first time they've ever gone on a message board or a chat room was for this show. I'd love to see the demographics, because it seems to be pulling in a very educated, conservative, patriotic group. It's also representing a group in a positive way that is rarely seen on network TV, what Hollywood would probably call "heartland conservatives." They vote in local and national elections, they own at least one gun, they've attended a NASCAR race, they've actually gone hunting. These people are my relatives, my friends and my coworkers. It's been very obvious to me over the years that most television writers are not a part of this group. So now CBS has some extremely devoted, new viewers. I hope this could get translated into an advertising pitch for a show. It should certainly appear attractive to many of the conservative candidates who will be advertising for the 2008 elections. I'll be watching the show closely to see how CBS handles this new audience. The fact that all of the eye network's new shows appear pretty weak doesn't hurt, either. It should be a very interesting ride for CBS.— Annmarie P.
Matt Roush: I would like to think the demographics for Jericho go beyond political considerations — that people have simply rallied around a show that intrigued, excited and at times moved them, although it's true that its setting shines light on a part of the U.S. you rarely see on TV, except maybe in Westerns. So perhaps it did strike a special chord in what some pundits call the "NASCAR nation." But I'm not convinced this is an entirely new audience for CBS, which has long been seen as the most mainstream of major networks, with its many crime-drama procedurals as well as The Unit and the military-themed JAG spin-off NCIS. Whatever the fate of Jericho, I would hate to think that it could succeed by simply pandering to a single political group, or that CBS would be punished by some if it eventually drops Jericho because the publicity over its resurrection didn't result in a significant-enough ratings spike.

Source: TVguide

No plan to wrap up series at 7 episodes...

Plucked from the void, primetime's Lazarus Jericho achieved the unlikely with its fan-powered resurrection, and now the cast and crew are beginning to talk openly about how they handled the unexpected news as it broke. Everyone who followed the story will remember that the most favored option was a pickup by a cable network, but a lot of the crew could not afford to hold out hope for too long. At this year's San Diego Comicon, the cast reminisced about how they reacted as word of the renewal spread to the cast.

To hear producer Jon Steinberg talk, Jericho living on in some manner or another was more or less a given. Some have tried to take the wind out of the fan movement's efforts by insinuating that the cancellation was nothing more than a publicity stunt, an accusation hardly supported by CBS's limited mid-season order. “We all sort of knew something was going to happen. We heard something about cable, and then we got the news that we were coming back.” Steinberg told Comicon attendees.

For the cast, the news proliferated quickly. “I was in my garage and Ahsley said the business office had called, and when lawyers get involved you know it's official.” Skeet Ulrich recalled. It was Ulrich himself that brought the news to Lennie James. “I picked up the phone and Skeet's voice saying,' we're back on' and then just us screaming like little girls,” he said.

As things sit, Jericho will have seven episodes to prove it is worthy a full-season order. Previously, rumors were that the writers had a plan to wrap the series if it failed to get another order. James, however, disputed that. “We plan on coming back. I know what you are saying. Right now, we do not have a plan to wrap it up at the end of episode seven.”

Source: BuddyTV

[Old] Ausiello report...

Question: That wasn’t very nice, teasing a Lost spoiler on your latest vodcast and not giving one.
